The Copernicus (NCC-1701/7) was a Federation class F shuttlecraft in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. The shuttle was assigned to the starship USS Enterprise during the decade of the 2260s.
Service history[]
In 2268, when the Enterprise spotted the first warp flight of the Makon civilization, Captain James T. Kirk and a landing party visited Makon III aboard the Copernicus. The shuttle landed on the warp ship's runway, but later was moved to a less prominent location for security reasons. (TOS - Star Trek: The Manga - Uchu comic: "Inalienable Rights")
During a survey mission that year, a violent solar flare from Tau Omega fried the ship's systems. Pilot Lewis Baker was able to bring the shuttle down without loss of life atop a plateau near a jungle on Tau Omega III, but the ship's starboard engine nacelle was sheered off on impact. An omegasaurus later kicked and crumpled the wreckage, killing Doctor James Brennan, who had ducked inside for protection. (TOS - FASA RPG short story: "Planetfall")
