Cordwainer Smith (1913-1966) was an American author.

Smith wrote science fiction stories for Galaxy Science Fiction. Herbert Rossoff thought that his own name and his writing were on par with Smith. (DS9 novel: Far Beyond the Stars)

The episode and novelization differ in the names of two of the writers that Rossoff names. In the episode, he mentions Heinlein, Bradbury and Sturgeon, but in the novelization mentions Heinlein, Bova and Smith.
