Coriolanus Quince was a 23rd century Human man, a well-meaning genius who became a notoriously jinxed inventor in the fields of biology and chemistry.

Biography[]

He hoped to improve the galaxy for the sake of peace, and considered his failures a string of bad luck. Quince's inventions seriously damaged the ecologies of several Federation colonies in the 2260s decade. Intending to double the grain crops yield on Demostonies IV, he instead sprouted dinitrogen monoxide gas-producing weeds. Promising to double the water supply on Quatar, an unforseen polymerization turned all the water into pink gelatin.

In 2269, Quince presented forged credentials to attend the Pomplance conference as "Jack Sprat". He told the Pomplancians he was a Federation representative, while telling Captain James T. Kirk he was a neutral observer. His real purpose was to spike delegates' wine with his new truth serum drug, hoping to compel honesty during the talks. But his actions sabotaged the convocation, and he was beamed aboard the starship USS Enterprise under arrest.

He lamented that protein chains he used in the serum weren't stable enough, as its effects were short-lived. Afterward, Commander Spock observed that they'd have to let Quince go, as no permanent harm was caused, but they did keep him in the brig while transporting him to another planet.
