Flaring coronas of binary stars.

The corona is the outermost layer of a star's atmosphere which is made of plasma and is hotter than the underlying photosphere.

In 2218, the Fireball Eclipse on Earth resulted when a solar storm erupted during a solar eclipse, creating previously unseen behavior in Sol's corona. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: Swordhunt)

The coronas of the binary stars Salgorax and Neptor in the Salgorax-Neptor system created arching solar flares about once per century. The spectacle was witnessed by Federation colonists on the planet Santar in 2265. (TOS comic: "Slaves of the Frogmen")

When the USS Enterprise came under attack by eight Klingon warships in 2275, the Enterprise managed to lure one vessel, the IKS Amak, into the corona of 102 Piscium where its hull buckled and the ship was destroyed. (TOS novel: The Wounded Sky)

In 2372, the astrophysics department aboard the USS Enterprise-E reported that that the corona of Pantera had become increasingly unstable and was on a build-up to produce flare activity. (TNG - Slings and Arrows eBook: A Sea of Troubles)
