History and specifics[]

Planets were protected from cosmic rays by their magnetospheres. (DTI novel: Forgotten History)

The Earth satellite Sputnik 1 was outfitted with cosmic ray detectors, (Star Trek Magazine Issue 136: "Treknology Timeline") as was the Voyager series of probes. (Star Trek: The Magazine vol. 2, Issue 8: "Briefing: V'Ger")

In the year 2267, a mummy from Heitius VII was kept in an electronic sarcophagus to protect it from cosmic rays while the USS Enterprise transported it to the Federation Alien Life Studies Institute. (TOS comic: "The Mummies of Heitius VII")

In 2268, solar flares from the star Minara produced a solar storm with dangerous levels of cosmic rays. (TOS episode: "The Empath")
