Crane was a 23rd century Human male. By the late 2250s, Crane was serving in Starfleet as an operations division lieutenant assigned aboard the USS Farragut as an engineer.

During the Farragut's mission to Tycho IV in 2257, Crane was working in a Jefferies tube near deck 17 to perform repairs on the ship's impulse drive, when the ship was attacked by the dikironium cloud creature. He was amongst two hundred crewmen killed by the creature. Lieutenant James T. Kirk discovered his body when he had to gain access to the tube in order to complete the repairs.
