Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

Crawlers were originally a type of animal lifeform native to the planet Archernar IV that became sentient by the 23rd century.

History and specifics[]

The crawlers resembled Terran insects. The Archernarians used them like Terran horses for riding. They were also hunted and used for consumption by the Archernarians. (TOS - Mission's End comics: "Issue 1", "Issue 2", "Issue 3")

Having resided and worked within the "Heart of God" power generator for thousands of years, they were exposed to quadraphasic radiation that by the 2260s decade started to evolve them to sentience. They became able to speak for themselves and turn on their masters. (TOS - Mission's End comic: "Issue 4")

Crawlers kept hidden an "Eye of God" hexagonal panel from the Heart of God. When Dr. Leonard McCoy and a landing party searched the jungle for a particular plant species, Crawlers surrounded and took them to their Eye of God. Using a universal translator, they asked for help. (TOS - Mission's End comic: "Issue 3")

The Crawlers revolted as a group in 2270, stealing a second "Eye of God" and unintentionally destabilizing the generator. Spock deduced by their methodology that the Crawlers were sapient and that this was a civil war demanding noninterference per the Prime Directive. (TOS - Mission's End comic: "Issue 4")

When the High Administrator learned that the Crawlers had been mutated, "raised up" by the Divine Builders as he put it, he decreed that they be treated as equals going forward. With the revolt successful, Crawlers worked to restore the damaged generator. After it was repaired, the Crawlers and Archernarians happily allowed the generator to take the world-ship into another dimension. (TOS - Mission's End comic: "Issue 5")
