Appendices[]
Background[]
- In addition to crossovers, properties also have been officially adapted as alternate reality versions for use within Star Trek.
- When author Larry Niven adapted the short story "The Soft Weapon" from his Known Space series into TAS episode & Log Ten novelization: The Slaver Weapon in 1973, he created TAS versions of the Slavers as well as the Kzinti characters Chuft-Captain, Flyer and Telepath to interact with the Enterprise crew, whereas in the original short story they interacted with a Pierson's Puppeteer and others. Being adaptations, Kzinti remain in Star Trek, with their territory having been plotted in ST references: Maps, Star Charts and a recurring Kzinti crewmember serving aboard the USS Cerritos in Star Trek: Lower Decks.
- The characters Rhuna and Kyr from the 1974 TOS comic: "Siege in Superspace" also appeared in Star Spangled War Stories #180, a non-Star Trek comic published in the same year.
- In 1982, when Niven brought back the Kzinti for TOS comic: "The Wristwatch Plantation", he adapted another of his creations, the hive-minded Bebebebeque from his Draco Tavern series, changing them to be more independently functional for TOS.
- In 1985, West End Games board game author Greg Costikyan officially added the Philanthropists and Macrons to Star Trek in The Adventure Game. Both species originated in Cosmic Encounter, which had been owned by West End Games at the time.
- In 1985, Costikyan also officially added the Gwynhyfarr to Star Trek as a substitute for the Gorn in The Adventure Game. This species starred in West End Games' Web and Starship board game.
Other tie-ins[]
- On a "less-than-official" basis, certain characters and situations have been played into Star Trek in "meta" reference situations:
- The novel Ishmael featured multiple characters from the western TV series Here Come the Brides although there is no evidence that the author was given permission to include them.
- The Star Trek: Picard episode "Watcher" introduced Dale who was a friend of Guinan. Dale had previously appeared in the TV series 12 Monkeys and MacGyver, being played by the same actor and wearing the same tie in all three appearances.
