Cyborg is a term derived from the English language words "cybernetic organism", referring to a synthesis or combination of natural life processes with machines and technology. The further shortening of this term can be considered to be the origin of the name of the Borg civilization, a notable example of cyborg life.
The Borg
In 4527 BCE, the Human Karl Graylock was transformed into one of the first two Borg drones by the Caeliar Sedín on Arehaz. It was Graylock who unintentionally gave the Borg their name, as his last free thought was I won't be... won't become... a... cy- Borg. (ST - Destiny novel: Lost Souls)
People that were freed from the Borg Collective's Hive Mind were often dependent on their cybernetic implant and retained them. These people were known as liberated Borg. Annika Hansen remained a cyborg for years after her liberation. ({{e|VOY|Scorpion (episode)|Scorpion) She, along with everyone else in the galaxy, had her Borg implants transformed into catoms when the Collective was absorbed into the Caeliar gestalt. The Borg Collective returned in the early 25th century. No longer a major threat to the Alpha Quadrant Alliance, numerous individuals were freed from the Collective and joined the Federation, Klingon Empire and Romulan Republic's ranks. (STO video game: Legacy of Romulus) Captain Four of Ten was one of those liberated Borg who retained not only their implants but their Borg designations as well. (STO mission: "Borg Red Alert")
The Borg Cooperative was a nation of liberated Borg who joined the Delta Alliance in order to destroy the Collective and liberate all drones. (STO video game: Delta Rising)
History
In 2326, the Human Starfleet officer Darya Bat-Levi was equipped with artificial limbs and organs after suffering an accident that damaged her body. She refused to upgrade her technologically outdated implants in the following years but accepted counseling sessions with Commander Yuriel Tyvan in 2336. The sessions and the events her ship, the USS Enterprise-C, was involved in at the time helped Bat-Levi to come to terms with her cyborg nature, and she agreed to have her prosthetics improved.
