Cyclops was a mythological creature from the Human history of the planet Earth.

History and specifics

2,500 years ago, Ulysses and his crew traveled home after the events of the Trojan War. En route, his vessel sailed to the Land of the Lotus Eaters, where his crew was suddenly overcome by a compunction to relax and do nothing. Ulysses struck out on his own, surviving an attack by cannibals before encountering the cyclops. (TOS comic: "What Fools These Mortals Be..")

The poet Homer included this mono-ocular giant in the Odyssey. (TOS novel: The Rift)

In the year 2267, the USS Enterprise encountered six Beings from Mount Olympus including Zeus, Aeolus, Pan and Hermes. The Beings recreated Ulysses' ordeals from the Odyssey, this time challenging James T. Kirk, Leonard McCoy, and Spock to survive a confrontation with the cyclops, as well as fight Aeolus, cannibals, Charybdis, Scylla and the Sirens. Cyclops was about 60 feet tall and was unaffected by phaser fire, even when set to disintegrate. A full-strength burst from a protoplaster, aimed at his eye, harmed him long enough for the landing party to escape him. (TOS comic: "What Fools These Mortals Be..")

In 2366, Deanna Troi met a band of Dissenters on Rampart, people who rebelled against the censorship of imagination by taking on the names and traits of fictional characters. One was Powell, who had modeled his personality after Odysseus. Powell recharged his persona with torn illustrations and book covers depicting the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Trojan horse, and a Homeric ship. Troi recalled it was a tactic used by method actors. In 2376, after meeting Artemis and hearing that Thoth had visited the ship, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun considered that Mark McHenry would probably be glad not ever to run into any more Beings, dragons or the Cyclops. (NF novel: Being Human)

The Jequat, a subspecies of the Furies also are described as resembling Cyclops-like one-eyed stone-giants.
