For the primary universe counterpart, see D3 class (Klingon).

In the Kelvin timeline, the D3 class was a 22nd century Klingon Empire starship type, an interceptor class in Klingon Defense Force service in the 22nd and 23rd centuries. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

Specifications[]

Physical appearance[]

Structurally, the D3 class appeared avian. Ship sections included a command module at the front end, connected with the engineering hull through a long, neck-like corridor. A wing-like pylon extended outward from either side of the engineering hull. Long, thing warp nacelles sat on the wing tips.

Overall, the ship was reminiscent of a metallic, skeletal bird, similar to the D5-class.[6] The wings and warp nacelles closely resembled those of the D4-class[7] and D4x-class[8] birds-of-prey classes. On the D4 variants, the wings were moveable.

The conical command section resembled those of other 22nd century Klingon ships but its hull extended into two forward-facing prongs. Light emanated from the bridge window, the neck corridor, aq recess on the wings, and the aft-facing impulse engines. On Klingon ships, the light was red. On Augment vessels, it was yellow. Technology[]

Ships of the class could be produced when accessing their blueprints. Besides the Klingons, the Independent and Augments factions active in the Neutral zone had access to these. Like any ship used by these three groups, it's maximum warp factor, warp eight, matched that of the Federation flagship USS Enterprise}. The defense consisted of deflector shields, offense of disruptor arrays and photon torpedo launchers.

In combat, the D3 class was 30% more effective against Romulan ships. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

Service history[]

The Klingon Imperial Defense Force used ships of the D3 class since at least the 22nd century, primarily for escort and bombardment missions until the 2150s decade.

From the 2150s onwards, the D3 was re-classified as interceptor. Since then, the ship was often deployed as forward scout.

At one point, the D3 class was thought to be obsolete.

By the 2260s, it was not as well armed as the D4 classes, but the the nuclear fusion impulse engines and its light disruptors allowed a D3 interceptor to engage and escape more heavily armored vessels.

From the year 2262, Independents active in the Neutral Zone could build D3-class interceptors after building goodwill with the Klingon Empire. Ships of this class were also used by the rogue Klingon separatists and House of Antaak.

Following their establishment, the Augments faction seized D3-class interceptors as well, and modified them for their use. These were called hijacked D3-class ships. Their external light was switched from red to yellow, and the Augments replaced the Klingon logo with the Augment sigil. (ST video game: Fleet Command)
