The Damar class was a 25th century Cardassian Union starship type, a tier 6-rated intel science dreadnought in Self-Defense Force[1] service in the 2410s decade. (STO website: Victory Is Life: Gamma Vanguard Pack)
History and specifications[]
In the latter days of the Dominion War, Corat Damar led the rebellion to liberate the Cardassian Union from Dominion rule. Although he perished in 2375, the events paved the way for a democratization of Cardassia, and Damar was remembered as a great leader. (DS9 novel: A Stitch in Time)
In 2376, the first Damar-class starships had entered service and operated as destroyers. Ships of the class appeared as a miniaturised version of the pre-war Galor-class destroyer. (ST video game: Armada mission: "A Call to Power")
By the time of the Iconian War in 2410, the Keldon-class battleship CUV Damar was active. The Damar participated in the Second Battle of Earth, the final confrontation between the galactic alliance and Iconian Empire forces. (STO - The Iconian War mission: "Midnight")
In the aftermath, a new Damar was launched alongside the Ghemor-class prototype CUV Ghemor and the Detapa-class CUV Detapa in the same year. The Damar was the prototype for a dreadnought class that incorporated science vessel and intel starship features. The Cardassian Union shared this class with the rest of the Khitomer Alliance, including its newest member, the Dominion and its Vanguard Fleet. It was conceived as a juggernaut to lead a new line of cloak-enabled, intelligence-focused starships. Keys to success were a focus on misdirection and undermining enemy effectiveness.
It was the first class equipped with a deployable Cardassian support platform cluster[4]. Conventional weapons included spiral wave disruptor beam arrays, cannon and turret, and photon torpedo launchers[3]. Protective systems included deflector shields and a cloaking device[3]. Typical for science vessels of the early 25th century, the Damar was capable of sensor analysis and subsystem targeting[3]. Pioneering features, derived from its intel starship configuration, included active sensor arrays and warp signature masking[4]. Like all vessels in the Khitomer Alliance, this class could deploy shuttlecraft for mission needs, and was equipped to reach quantum slipstream and transwarp velocities when not cruising at warp 9.9+[3]. Alongside the Ghemor-class intel flight-deck cruiser, the Damar was the first carrier to deploy Yukawa-class frigates, which were based on the older Hideki-class vessels[4]. From 2410 onward, the Damar represented its class in the Alliance's shipyard operations interface. (STO - Engineered for War mission: "Ceremony")
Khitomer Alliance flag officers deployed Damar for missions around the galaxy's four quadrants as part of the four-quadrant strategy. (STO - Victory Is Life mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", admiralty system)
Besides the burgeoning Allied Fleet Service, Khitomer Alliance classes like the Damar were made available to the military services of each member state. At the time of launch, those were Federation Starfleet, the Klingon Defense Force, the Romulan Republic Navy, and the Dominion's Jem'Hadar Vanguard Fleet. (STO - Victory Is Life missions: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", "The Hunt is On", "Explore the Flotilla", "Ceremony")
Councillor Elim Garak participated in the investigation into Hur'q aggression and used the Damar-class CUV Tain as his flagship while in the Gamma Quadrant. (STO - Gamma Quadrant mission: "The Search")
The ship was present during the final confrontation between the Vanguard Fleet and their allies against the Hur'q swarms at Empersa, the second Founder homeworld. (STO - Gamma Quadrant mission: "Home")
