Dan Miller was a 23rd century Human man. He was an engineer who served in Starfleet aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk in the 2260s.

Biography[]

Miller was a protegé of Montgomery Scott who promoted him from an assistant engineer in the year 2268 to second engineer by 2270. Like Scott, he would rather work than eat. Spock regarded Miller's judgment as trustworthy.

He was a musician and musical enthusiast. He played the harmonica, and liked a popular nontraditional style of Earth music exemplified by Radovic Ja'an's "Shaken to the Bones".

He was friends with Yeoman John Brunowski and described as good natured with a blocky-looking face. Nyota Uhura called him Danny. (TOS novel: Ghost-Walker)

History[]

In 2268, Miller and Brunowski tried to reprogram the food synthesizers to create coffee beans instead of bulk coffee, as well as secretly appropriate equipment to recreate good-tasting chocolate.

Miller cleared three hull sections of raw material storage behind the fabrication room on deck nine so that Emiko Adams and Gilden could store collections of antique novels.

While on a shift covering for a computer technician in the main computer room on deck eight, Miller heard strange pounding and tapping sounds, but was unable to trace the source. He thought the timing of the knocks seemed organic. After reporting them, Spock investigated, remaining in the core room for more than an hour before hearing the sounds himself. Later, Miller helped Spock recover the disembodied consciousness of Captain Kirk into computer components in the core. (TOS novel: Ghost-Walker)

In 2269, Miller installed customized modifications to safeguards that would have prevented the ship from being taken over by Dylan Arios.

In 2270, when pirates took took control of the Enterprise, Miller was among those trapped in the powerless deck eleven recreation lounge. (TOS novel: Crossroad)
