Daniel Alden (also known as Lloyd Alden, Philip Alden or Richard Alden) was a Starfleet officer who served aboard the USS Enterprise during the 2260s.
Service history[]
While Alden was officially attached to the sciences division, Alden split himself between various assignments aboard the Enterprise, including communications, navigation, and engineering.
In early 2265, Alden was the communications officer on duty when the Enterprise was assigned to try and deflect a rogue pulsar from decimating the climate of Mestiko. (TOS - Mere Anarchy eBook: Things Fall Apart)
In 2265, Alden and Lieutenant, junior grade Joe Tormolen met up with Hikaru Sulu in the Enterprise's botany lab, and then proceeded to attend Lee Kelso's memorial service in the ship's chapel. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)
Before the Enterprise stopped off at Starbase Vanguard for repairs en route back to Federation space, Alden suffered an accident in engineering, though nothing to warrant Dr. Mark Piper to alert Captain James T. Kirk about. (VAN novel: Harbinger)
Shortly after, Alden transferred to the Delanos VI research colony where his fiancée had just been appointed as an administrator at the colony. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)
Alternate timelines[]
In one alternate timeline, Phil Alden was communications officer of the UESS Enterprise, and was grievously injured when that vessel was attacked by Orion pirates in 2264. (TOS - Infinity's Prism novel: A Less Perfect Union)
Appendices[]
Background[]
Alden's first name was never revealed in his appearance in TOS episode: "Where No Man Has Gone Before". The TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution was the first to suggest the name Daniel for Alden. However, ST novel: Captain's Peril and the book Federation: The First 150 Years go against this by offering the first name Lloyd, in honor of Lloyd HaynesMA, who played Alden in the TOS episode. TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek, Issue 2" mentions that Uhura succeeded Richard Alden as Chief of Communications.
The TOS - Infinity's Prism novel: A Less Perfect Union later gave the name Phil; however, as this story takes place in an alternate timeline it may not reflect on the primary universe Alden.
Most recently, the novel TOS novel: The Captain's Oath called him Philip Alden.
