The Dauntless class was a 24th century Species 116[1] starship type, a tier 6 experimental[3] science vessel[4] first built in the 2370s[1] decade. (VOY episode: "Hope and Fear")

The class[6] was adopted by Federation Starfleet as early as the 2380s. (PRD episode: "A Moral Star, Part 2")

And in Federation Starfleet[2] service from the 2410s[5] decade. (VOY episode: "Hope and Fear", ENT episode: "Azati Prime", STO - Delta Rising mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

History and specifications[]

Species 116[]

Columbia class dorsal

Enterprise NX-01.

In the year 2151, the United Earth Starfleet vessel Enterprise NX-01 was the first Human spacecraft with the revolutionary warp 5 engine. (ENT episode & novelization: Broken Bow)

Conceived by Arturis of Species 116 in 2374, the class prototype USS Dauntless was a fake Starfleet ship built to fool the crew of USS Voyager, in revenge for Captain Kathryn Janeway's interference in the war between the Borg and Species 8472. Arturis, one of the few survivors his people, created the USS Dauntless through particle synthesis, a mechanism beyond Starfleet's understanding at the time. He held them responsible for the assimilation of his species at the hands of the Borg Collective by stopping Species 8472 from annihilating the Borg in 2373. Arturis and his faux Starfleet ship ended up assimilated after Janeway and Seven of Nine foiled his plot, but Voyager retained the ship's specs. (VOY episode: "Hope and Fear")

A Dauntless-class starship was 205 meters long. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 17: "USS Dauntless")

The exposure to the Dauntless systems enabled Starfleet to develop its own quantum slipstream drive a year later. (VOY episode: "Timeless")

Starfleet[]

By 2379, the experimental slipstream drive was integrated into several vessels. (VOY novel: Full Circle)

Dauntless-80816

The USS Dauntless (NCC-80816) in 2384.

Dauntless NX-47700

Starfleet's USS Dauntless prototype in 2410.

A Dauntless-class[6] ship operated under the command of Vice Admiral Janeway in 2384. Janeway's ship was on a mission to find the USS Protostar, another Starfleet vessel missing in the Delta Quadrant. Its spaceframe was modified compared to the NX-01-A, including a mushroom gill-like section at the aft of the primary hull, and elongated warp nacelles. (PRD episode: "A Moral Star, Part 2")

The design in its original appearance was adapted by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers[3] and put into mass-production as a genuine Starfleet science vessel in 2410 as part of Operation Delta Rising. The Dauntless class was equipped with a particle synthesis console. (STO - Delta Rising mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

That technology was reminiscent of the holographic emitters employed on the USS Incursion and Shadow-class science vessels in the 2370s. (ST video game: Armada II)

Initially, a ship of the class required a minimum commanding officer's rank of vice admiral or higher. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

In 2554, the USS Dauntless was one of the ships taking part in the Battle of Procyon V between the Federation, led by the USS Enterprise-J, and the Temporal Liberation Front. (STO - Future Proof mission: "Ragnarok")

Alternate timeline[]

Dauntless class Procyon

The Battle of Procyon V.

In a timeline where the Delphic Expanse was not destroyed in 2154, a Dauntless-class starship participated in the Battle of Procyon V in the 26th century. In this battle the Federation defeated the Sphere Builders. (ENT episode: "Azati Prime")

Livery[]

In the 25th century, the design of the Dauntless-class experimental science vessel allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at starbases. These options were designated Type 1-7, Upgrade and Veteran. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
