Dean Wesley Smith is a prolific author of Star Trek works, most in collaboration with his wife, Kristine Kathryn Rusch. He is also co-developer (with John J. Ordover) of The Captain's Table series concept, as well as the primary editor for the annual Strange New Worlds contest.

Smith was the winner of the 1989 World Fantasy Award and by the mid-90s he had written 14 novels and numerous short stories. With his wife they wrote the initial story for the interactive media Star Trek: Klingon, and later wrote the novelization of its script. [1]
