The Death Rite or D20-class is a type of cruiser used by the Klingons in the 23rd century. (FASA RPG reference: Klingon Ship Recognition Manual) The class was alternatively designated as a destroyer by Starfleet. (ST video game: Legacy)

Service history[]

In the 2250s, Death Rite D20A class VII cruisers were active during the Four Years War. The class was commissioned on reference stardate 1/9606, with shipyards at Gnee Re' and H'rez constructing a total of 13 cruisers per year. (FASA RPG references: Klingon Ship Recognition Manual, The Four Years War)

382 Death Rite D20A-class cruisers were constructed between the 2250s and early 2270s, from reference stardates 1/9602 to 2/1603, with 83 refit to D20C-class specifications. By the late 2280s, 292 had been destroyed, 2 were missing, and 2 were in service to Klingon families.

The D20C variant entered service c. 2270, on reference stardate 2/1202. As of the late 2280s, 271 had entered service, 224 were still in service, 19 were destroyed, 4 were missing, 1 had been scrapped, and 28 were in service to Klingon families.

The D20D variant entered service c. 2273, on reference stardate 2/1701. As of the late 2280s, 87 had entered service, with 80 still in service, 1 destroyed, 1 missing, and 4 in service to Klingon families. (FASA RPG reference: Klingon Ship Recognition Manual)

Death Rite-class cruisers were rarely encountered by Starfleet forces in the 2280s, suggesting that their primary use was against an unknown foe closer to the galactic core. (StarDrive Issue 1: "Tactics of the Imperial Klingon Navy")

Specifications[]

During the 23rd century this class of vessels was notable for its particularly powerful sensors as they were the only ones capable of punching through a B'rel class ship's cloaking device. (ST video game: Legacy)

The D20A was less maneuverable than a D7-class but faster. It was powered by two type KWC-1 warp engines and four type KIC-2 impulse engines which provided a cruising speed of warp seven and maximum speed of warp eight. The cruiser was defended with type KSF deflector shields and weighed 85,000 metric tons.

The D20C variant was more maneuverable, had stronger shields, and had a more durable superstructure. Power was provided by two type KWC-2 warp engines and four type KIC-2 impulse engines, providing a cruising speed of warp eight and maximum speed of warp nine. It was defended with type KSK deflector shields and weighed 91,300 metric tons.

Disruptors on the D20D variant had greater range and 16% more firepower. Power was provided by two type KWC-2 warp engines and four type KIC-2 impulse engines, providing a cruising speed of warp eight and maximum speed of warp nine. It was defended with type KSO deflector shields and weighed 95,600 metric tons. (FASA RPG reference: Klingon Ship Recognition Manual)
