Deep Space Research Facility 39 is a Federation scientific outpost.
The facility did not have a shuttle bay and had only navigational deflectors for defense. A staff of 10 all-volunteer Starfleet personnel operated the central complex in one-year tours and earned hazard pay due to potential danger from research experiments. The facility was not located within a star system for safety reasons and also to isolate the labs from gravitational interference.
History[]
In the 2260s, the facility's four laboratories were leased out to private corporations Bio/Genetic Research Incorporated, Multiplanet Metals Incorporated, New Amsterdam Gravitics Company and Tachyon Micromechanics, Ltd.. By late 2269, 24 researchers were stationed there. (FASA RPG module: The Vanished)
In the year 2269, research conducted by facility staff on transporter design was inadvertently disrupted by the presence of the I'Iglii. The crew of the Federation starship USS Enterprise was called to assist and made first contact with the aliens. (FASA RPG modules: The Vanished, Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)
