For other uses, see Defender.

The Defender-class was a type of starship operated by the Federation Starfleet as a bomber in the 2250s[1] of the alternate reality created by the temporal displacement of the Narada.

Overview

The class featured a small saucer section connected at the rear to an elongated secondary hull. On either side of the engineering hull were pylons connecting to pairs of warp nacelles, giving the class four nacelles in total. The Defender-class was designated a bomber, and was armed with explosive charges which it could deploy in its wake. The class was faster than its Starfleet contemporaries, allowing it to make fast runs into enemy controlled areas to deploy it's weaponry.

Like its contemporaries, the Arbiter-class, Constitution-class, Guardian-class, and Interceptor-class, the Defender-class could, in addition to its standard systems, be armed with quantum torpedoes, and the ability to temporal shift. Also in common with other classes, the Defender-class had at least one military shuttle, which could be used as an escape pod[2].

In the 2250s members of the Defender-class vessels were part of the Starfleet force that battled starships of the Romulan Star Empire. (TOS video game: D-A-C)

Background

  1. 1.0 1.1 D-A-C gives no date, but as it features the USS Enterprise it is presumably set after the events of Star Trek, which featured the launch of the Enterprise in 2258.
  2. 2.0 2.1 D-A-C includes a feature allowing a player to launch an "escape pod" when their ship is about to be destroyed, permitting them to respawn and continue playing quicker. The escape pod design for all Federation ships in the game is a military shuttle.
  • In D-A-C starship names are selected and allocated at random. The game features eleven Federation starship names which are assigned randomly to all classes of ships in the game. All known Defender-class names are therefore also known as the names of vessels of the four other Starfleet classes in the game.
