The Deferi were a politically neutral, warp-capable humanoid species originating from the planet Defera in the Alpha Quadrant. (STO video game: Star Trek Online)

Society and culture[]

The Deferi venerated the Preservers for valuing life. The ancient humanoids left a number of archaeological sites behind in Deferi space. (STO mission: "Cold Call")

Philosophy[]

The Deferi believed very strongly in the concept of a universal "balance", and considered every action they took through this lens. Surah, a Deferi ambassador, stated that "when one side is dominant over the other, the inequity breeds resentment. The resentment leads to hatred and misunderstanding." (STO mission: "Cold Call")

Military[]

The Deferi maintained a defensive military, Deferi Space Security, but it was little match for either the Borg or their old enemies the Breen. (STO video game: Star Trek Online)

Government[]

The Deferi government was largely a direct democracy, with officials proposing policy changes and putting them to public polls. Public officials could also be removed at will by the populace. (STO mission: "Cold Call")

History[]

In ancient times the Deferi aided a Klingon fleet dispatched by Emperor Sompek to explore the Badlands. They maintained good diplomatic relations with the Klingon Empire ever since. They were also on speaking terms with the Federation. (STO mission: "Cold Call")

By the year 2409 the Deferi sought to expand beyond their homeworld due to overpopulation. This resulted in their attracting the attention of better-equipped races, not all of them friendly. In particular the Breen and the Borg launched separate attacks on Defera. (STO missions: "Second Wave", "Cold Call", "Borg Invasion of Defera")
