Military career departments in 2409.

A department, also known as a division was a type of subdivision within an organization. The government of the United Federation of Planets was organised into separate departments. One such subdivision was the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations. (DTI novel: Watching the Clock)

Starfleet, the military arm of the Federation, assigned its officers to career-specific divisions. (STO - Tutorial missions: "Graduation Day", "End of Watch", "A Day on the Farm", "Hunt")

The Federation Department of Temporal Investigations (DTI) was a Federation governmental that dealt with protecting the timeline and reported to the Federation Science Council. The DTI was established in the 23rd century and succeeded by Starfleet's Temporal Integrity Commission in the 29th century and eventually the civilian Federation Temporal Agency in the 31st. Operations, command and sciences division officers in 2371.

In the 24th century, Starfleet was divided into three primary departments, which could be differentiated visually by the department color on their Starfleet uniform. In the year 2371, this included the command division, whose department color was red. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: The Command Division)

The operations department comprised the engineering and security divisions and wore operations gold. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: The Operations Division)

The medical division was part of the sciences division. Their uniforms included sciences blue-green. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: The Sciences Division)

In the 2410s decade, the militaries of the Khitomer Alliance members recognised three primary departments: tactical, engineering and science. Starfleet's organization was mirrored by the Klingon Defense Force (KDF), Romulan Republic Navy (RRF) and Dominion Vanguard Fleet. (STO - Tutorial missions: "Graduation Day", "End of Watch", "A Day on the Farm", "Hunt")

Besides the primary departments, specializations were available for officers that could operate separately or as a dual role with the existing departments. In 2411, these specializations included command officer, intelligence officer, miracle worker, pilot, temporal operative, constable, commando and strategist. (STO - Delta Rising mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Duty officers were overseen by department heads and assigned to general departments and specific specializations.
