Deru was a male Cardassian, once a member of the military stationed on Terok Nor.
After the Dominion War, Deru began buying land from Cardassian individuals in need of quick funds and relief supplies. Enlisting Quark as a silent partner, Deru purchased land on Cardassia, although the Orion Syndicate found out and Quark was forced to go to Ro Laren for help.
