Dorvan V was the fifth planet in the Dorvan system, located near the border between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union in the galaxy's Alpha Quadrant.

It was classified as either as a class M[1] or a class L[2] world. (ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia; ST video game: Infinite)

History and specifics[]

In 2350, a Native American group, whose ancestors had left Earth in 2170 in the 22nd century in order to preserve their traditional culture, settled on Dorvan V. (TNG episode: "Journey's End", ST website: StarTrek.com)

The Cardassians wanted control of Dorvan V and this desire for the planet was one of the main reasons for the Federation-Cardassian War. In the 2360s, a truce was declared and negotiations were held on Tohvun III. One of the outcomes the Cardassians hoped for was control of Dorvan V to be ceded to them. (DS9 novel: A Stitch in Time)

In 2370, under a new treaty, the Federation ceded its claims on Dorvan V to Cardassia. The USS Enterprise-D was assigned to evacuate the human colonists, although they resisted this forced relocation, nearly leading to a military confrontation. This was avoided when Cardassian Gul Evek agreed to a plan which would allow the humans to remain on Dorvan V, under Cardassian authority. (TNG episode: "Journey's End")

Chakotay was worried about the inhabitants of Dorvan V living under the Cardassians, although he also thought that due to their small numbers, their peaceful nature and possessing only minimal technology, the Cardassians would leave them alone. (TNG novel: Quarantine)

In an alternate timeline, a military confrontation did result over the question of the Dorvan V evacuation, leading to a six-day battle and a renegotiation of the border. DTI agents Dulmer and Gariff Lucsly visited the planet in 2373 searching for the cause of this divergence. (TNG short story: "Gods, Fate, and Fractals")
