Charybdis

LCARS display of the ESS Charybdis.

The ESS Charybdis was a 21st century Earth spaceship operating under the auspices of NASA. It was the third manned attempt to travel beyond the Sol system. It was the tenth in the series of Odyssey spaceship launches. (ST short story: "The Immortality Blues")

History

The BBI 103-class Charybdis was launched on July 23, 2037 under the command of Colonel Stephen G. Richey. There were fourteen other crewmembers on board for the extra-solar survey mission.

With the crew in hibernation chambers, the ship travelled towards the Theta 116 system. The ship's computer woke Colonel Richey nine days before reaching Theta 116 VIII, but he let the rest of the crew sleep as part of the mission was to gather information on long-duration habitation. During the mission, the communications system malfunctioned and all attempts to repair it proved futile.

In orbit of Theta 116 VIII, an alien intelligence inadvertently contaminated the Charybdis, killing everyone on board except for Richey.

In 2365, a Klingon cruiser discovered the remains of the Charybdis which were then investigated by the USS Enterprise. (TNG episode: "The Royale"; Star Trek Magazine Issue 162: "Blast Off!")
