The Earhart class was a 25th century Federation starship class, a strike wing escort and variant subclass of the 23rd century Engle-class escort, in Starfleet service from the 2410s decade. (STO website: Awakening: Strike Wing Escort Bundle!, STO - Awakening mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
The class was conceived when the Advanced Starship Design Bureau (ASDB) recovered the 150-year abandoned Yard 39 and its Engle-class technology. (STO website: Age of Discovery: The Stats of the Europa Class!)
Service history and specifications[]
The Engle-class USS Earhart was active in the 2250s decade. During the Battle of the Binary Stars on 11 May 2256, the Earhart was lost. The battle marked the onset of the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-2257. (DSC episode: "Battle at the Binary Stars")
150 years later, in 2410, Ensign Elyos and Lieutenant Whetu of the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards discussed the recovery of Yard 39 and several hulks of Starfleet ships hastily abandoned there when the star TL-9139 erupted and flooded its system with baryon radiation in 2259. This included the USS Engle, another Engle-class starship. With the radiation suddenly diminishing, Starfleet was able to recover Yard 39 and its assets. (STO - Age of Discovery short story: "Utopia Planetia: The Mystery of Yard 39")
Around the same time, Starfleet acquired the 2256-era ISS Engle, prototype of the Terran Empire's Engle-class carrier. It was adapted for Starfleet service as mirror Engle strike wing escort. (STO website: Age of Discovery: The Mirror Engle Carrier Leads a New Infinity Lock Box!)
The Earhart, and the relaunched and refitted Engle-class, shared the same capabilities and could exchange hull components between them, which mandated they keep a similar size. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock") The Engle-class was 387.73 meters long. (DSC Issue 17: "USS T'Plana-Hath") Both classes were equipped with a subatomic field disruptor and a cascading gravimetric disruptions console. As strike wing escorts, the ships combined escort maneuverability with hangar bays that allowed them to act as a carrier. By default, the hangars were fitted with Class C shuttlecraft. (STO website: Awakening: Strike Wing Escort Bundle!, STO - Awakening mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
The Klingon Defense Force counterpart to the new Earhart and Engle ships was the Sech-class strike wing escort. (STO website: Awakening: Strike Wing Escort Bundle!)
From 2410, the USS Fort was part of the rapid reaction task force 13-47 . (DSC Issue 09: "USS Europa")
Livery[]
In the 25th century, the design of the Earhart-class strike wing escort allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of hull materials, which could be modified further at shipyards. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
