Ed Appel was a 23rd century Human man. He was a geologist and mining engineer at the Pergium Production Station mining colony on Janus VI in the 2260s.

Biography[]

By the 2260s, Appel had become an authority on geology and mining engineering. He was also an expert marksman with qualified training in planetary ecology and computer operations. (FASA RPG module: Witness for the Defense)

Appel worked as Wilson Vanderberg's production chief for many years. By 2267, Vanderberg trusted him with his life.

In the year 2267, when a Horta began killing people, Appel and Billy Anderson caught a brief sight of it. Appel shot it with his hand phaser, but the animal still struck and killed Anderson, and Appel barely got away with his life. (TOS - Star Trek 4 novelization: The Devil in the Dark)

When the USS Enterprise arrived to assist, Appel was quick to point out that the Federation starship was in orbit, while the Horta was slaughtering people deep underground. Later, he led a group of miners to search a portion of level 23, eventually rendezvousing with a security detail led by Lieutenant Osborne. Captain James T. Kirk and Spock made contact with the Horta while Appel, Wilson Vanderberg, and other miners were held back. Out of frustration, Appel overpowered the security officers and led a mob to kill the Horta, but Kirk stopped them. (TOS episode & Star Trek 4 novelization: The Devil in the Dark)

In 2270, Appel took the lead when the USS Enterprise returned to Janus VI to investigate the deaths of a Horta and miner Louis Handy, because Vanderberg was required to serve as prosecutor in the case. Appel met the landing party, updated them on what happened, and gave them a tour, introducing them to key witnesses. When it was determined that the dead Horta was a second, previously unknown Mother Horta, Appel organized a search for the original All Mother with tunnel runners. (FASA RPG module: Witness for the Defense)
