Summary[]
Boothby, on the verge of retirement, is given the task of training up his temporary replacement, a Starfleet engineer named Deagan, and recalls his own training, when he was supposed to be joining the Academy as a librarian but instead was taught a love of gardening. After discussing their history, Deagan contacts Picard who convinces Starfleet to abolish the mandatory retirement age. Deagan tells Boothby he'd be privileged to replace him when he actually retires.
