El Capitan

El Capitan in 2287.

El Capitan (sometimes called El Cap) was a mountain located in Yosemite National Park, on Earth.

In an attempt to challenge himself, James T. Kirk attempted to climb El Capitan solo in 2287. After climbing so high, Kirk lost his grip and began plummeting downwards. Fortunately, he was rescued by Spock and his pair of gravitation boots. Later, Kirk remarked that he knew he wouldn't die because his friends, Spock and Dr. McCoy, were with him, and he'd always known he would die alone. (TOS movie: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier; TOS - Crucible novel: The Fire and the Rose)
