Elm was a type of planet species native to Earth, a deciduous tree found in North America. At least one such tree was located on the grounds of Starfleet Academy. (TNG episode: "The Drumhead")
History[]
In the 2250s decade, Sylvia Tilly, Gen Rhys and others spent time underneath the tree on the Academy campus. (DSC episode: "People of Earth")
Leonard McCoy and others used to study underneath the elm tree. In 2279, McCoy reminisced about his studies and found the tree remained a popular study point and a place for a quick lunch. (TOS novel: Living Memory)
By the 24th century, the tree was located close to the parade grounds of the academy. A circular bench surrounded the large trunk. Jean-Luc Picard, who attended Starfleet Academy in the 2320s, recalled sitting underneath that tree. (TNG episode: "The Drumhead")
While a cadet, Picard carved the initials of a lover, A.F., into Boothby's prized elm tree. (TNG episode: "The Game")
In the 2360s, non-commissioned officer Simon Tarses sat underneath the tree, watching training drills and imagining a life as fully-fledged Starfleet officer. Picard and Tarses later shared their experiences during their time aboard the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG episode: "The Drumhead")
In the 2370s, Captain Kathryn Janeway used an elm tree in her analogy to gain an understanding with the holographic Leonardo da Vinci. "Apprentice Catarina" asked the Maestro what he imagined his life would be like as a sparrow. Leonardo pondered that he'd make his home in the branch of an elm tree, live on a diet of insects, gathered straw for a nest, and sang for a companion in springtime. (VOY episode: "Concerning Flight")
In the year 3189, the time-displaced USS Discovery returned to Earth. The United Earth government granted its crew leave to visit the grounds of the defunct Starfleet Academy. Ensign Tilly and others returned to the tree and recognised it from 930 years earlier, despite the now much larger size of its trunk. Tilly hugged the tree and the crew received permission from Captain Saru to remain a few minutes longer. (DSC episode: "People of Earth")
