Dr. Emanuel Tagore was a 23rd century Human man, noted for his unique service as the first Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire.

Biography[]

By the 2230s, Professor Tagore had earned several Ph.D.s during a career of learning at such facilities as the University of New Bombay, University of Chicago, University of Edinburgh, University of Akademgorodok, the University of the Ocean of Storms, and most recently Makropyrios' College of Political Science, where he also taught. A man of integrity, Tagore read and spoke klingonaase as well as Federation Standard. He wore glasses over bright eyes and had thin silver-gray hair topping a wrinkly, bony face. He was an expert at chess and poker, and also was good at playing klin zha. He enjoyed Battlecruiser Vengeance, a Klingon serial drama. By this time, his wife had died of Quaker's neuromyelitis.

Tagore provided assistance to Starfleet Intelligence when they came upon a storehouse of Klingon literature and needed a translator. They suspected the books contained coded messages, but Tagore found them to be ordinary literature.

A young Spock met Tagore while taking classes at Makropyrios. (TOS - Worlds Apart novel: The Final Reflection)

Hallie Gannon was one of Tagore's best students. Tagore wrote her a hearty recommendation letter, which was appended to her Starfleet service record. (VAN - Declassified novella: The Ruins of Noble Men)

Federation ambassador[]

Tagore served on the Klingon homeworld and was one of five Humans prior to the 24th century who had been invited to the Empire's capital city. (FASA RPG module: The Klingons: Game Operation Manual)

Details of his service were dramatized in historical fiction. According to this source, in 2239, Tagore was assigned as the Federation's first diplomatic envoy to the Klingon homeworld. He met Captain Krenn of the IKV Fencer at the North American Prime Starport in New Mexico in 2239 when the Klingon officer landed on Earth, then met with Maxwell Grandisson III in Atlanta. Fencer brought Tagore back with them. An assassination attempt by the ship's XO Akhil was thwarted by Krenn and Gelly.

In 2243, a Babel Conference resolution vote resulted in closing the Federation Embassy on Qo'noS and returning the ambassador to Earth. Tagore presented a speech to the Imperial Council before he left. Tagore told Krenn the real reason for the vote was that the Federation wanted to empower multiple people to negotiate with Klingons. Once across the border, their return vessel was escorted by a task force led by Admiral Douglas Shepherd, another of Tagore's former students. (TOS - Worlds Apart novel: The Final Reflection)

Retirement and legacy[]

By 2259, Tagore had retired and was touring as a lecturer, sharing his knowledge of the Empire. (VAN - Declassified novella: The Ruins of Noble Men)

He was listed as the coauthor of An Informal Guide to the Klingon Empire, which provided significant information about Klingons and the Klingon homeworld to the general public. His friend and coauthor J.M. Ford may have gathered his mentor's notes and formalized them into a reference after the professor passed away. (FASA RPG module: The Klingons: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

In 2269, Tagore died when he was about 120 years old. Ford then fashioned the speculative historical novel The Final Reflection based on Tagore's experiences with Captain Krenn. The book was published in 2270, about a year after his death. (TOS - Worlds Apart novel: The Final Reflection)

Events cited in these early sources predate the modern canon timeline. Biographical dates are based on The Final Reflection's "current year" being set in 2270 and his time as ambassador set from 2239 - 2243 by the Pocket Books Timeline.
