En-Lai was a 23rd century man from the planet Calydon. He was an officer who served in the Federation Starfleet in the 2260s.
Biography[]
A merchant discovered En-Lai abandoned as a young child on an uncharted planet, his actual origins and species unknown at the time. A couple from Alpha Centauri adopted and raised him. His adoptive father was a Starfleet chaplain, and En-Lai followed his example.
In the 2260s decade, En-Lai served as chaplain aboard the Federation starship USS Hood. He sometimes seemed to manifest healing powers when he was near Calydon, though he was unaware of the cause and thought he had religious gifts. He became thought of as a "faith healer", with news agencies dubbing him "The One and En-Lai". As his abilities could not be proved, Starfleet convened a Board of Inquiry who decided he was a disruptive influence. He was transferred to the Starfleet Veterans' Hospital on Lavinius V, where the reverend might help more severely injured personnel.
He learned that incurably sick were healed by radiating energies from an enigmatic, non-corporeal "Lady of Calydon", who would mysteriously appear on that planet. He decided a pilgrimage was required to cure such terminally ill veteran patients as Malesa Norabi, Rakaar, and Haak Trobis. After Starfleet refused six shore leave requests, he recruited patients for a more ambitious plan. Monitoring subspace communications for weeks, they waited for an opportunity: a starship carrying severely injured personnel who might be persuaded to join their cause.
The time was ripe when the USS Enterprise picked up 19 crewmen suffering from Berthold radiation aboard the USS Defiant for transfer to medical facilities on Starbase 27. The Enterprise was diverted with a fake distress call. En-Lai shot Hospital Director Pitkin, then used Lavinian technology to disable the Enterprise while his allies neutralized ship's personnel. At gunpoint, Captain James T. Kirk was forced to take En-Lai and his people to Calydon.
Spock noticed that depictions of the non-corporeal entity resembled En-Lai. When she materialized on Calydon, En-Lai realized why he'd been instinctively compelled to seek her out — they were halves of a tandem lifeform, and they rejoined in order to complete their life cycle and die. Energy releases during their contact healed En-Lai's followers and the Berthold radiation victims. (TOS comic: "A Small Matter of Faith")
