Enceladus was a moon located in Federation space, orbiting the planet Saturn in the Sol star system in sector 001 of the galaxy's Alpha Quadrant.

History and specifics[]

It was also known as Sol VIB. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Starfleet Academy)

The moon was notable for its geysers, produced by cryovolcanoes. (historical accounts, DTI novel: Forgotten History)

During their flybys of Saturn, NASA's Voyager 1 probe photographed the moon in 1980, and Voyager 2 in 1981. (historical accounts, ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology)

In the year 2020, Marcus O'Herlihy complained about the USS Lewis & Clark being ordered to depart Saturn because they had not yet examined Enceladus. (TOS novel: The Rings of Time)

In the 2270s, while in the alternate reality where the Onlies's star system originated, Hikaru Sulu proposed that the starship USS Enterprise return to that system because of its similarity to the Sol system, in case they needed to engage the Vulcans of this reality. He cited the geysers of Enceladus along with Saturn's ring system and Jupiter's magnetic field as known potential means of defense. (DTI novel: Forgotten History)

In 2358, The Needle, with Jean-Luc Picard aboard, discovered a planet similar to Enceladus, also with cryovolcanoes. This world had aquatic life inhabiting subglacial oceans near volcanic vents. (TLE novel: The Buried Age)
