Background[]
The type-L blimp Enterprise was launched by Goodyear on 23 August 1934, originally designated NC-16A. In 1942, the United States Navy took possession of the blimp for service during wartime. She was re-designated L-5 and served mostly as a training ship. (1934 Enterprise blimp article at the Smithsonian's website.)
Her control car C-49, a.k.a. the U.S. Navy's control car L-5, was later refitted and installed aboard the Columbia N4A airship. In the 21st century, the control car was exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution's annex in Virginia. (Goodyear blimps article at the Airships website.)
