The Enterprise-class (or Enterprise-subclass, also known as the Constitution II-class) was a variant of the Constitution-class heavy cruisers which entered service in the late 23rd century. (FASA RPG modules: Federation Ship Recognition Manual, Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual; ST video games: Starfleet Command, Klingon Academy; ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology)
History and specifications[]
Specifications[]
The style hull seen on the Enterprise class was already in use on Soyuz-class ships like the the USS Collins, by the year 2265. (TOS - Spock: Reflections comic: "Issue 3")
The five-year mission of the Constitution-class ship USS Enterprise inspired some of the technological upgrades included in the refit, and the Enterprise had the honor to be the first Constitution class starship to receive those upgrades. (ST - DTI novel: Forgotten History)
The refit lasted a little over two years, from 2270 to 2273. (TOS movie: The Motion Picture, TOS novel: Ex Machina)
In the mirror universe, the Terran Empire also chose the Imperial Starfleet flagship, the ISS Enterprise, as the first ship to be refitted to the new configuration. (ST - Mirror Universe novel: The Sorrows of Empire)
By Reference stardate 2/2802 Starfleet was far enough in its experimentations with transwarp technology that it decided to refit 50 Enterprise-class heavy cruisers with transwarp engines when it felt the need for a support vessel capable of both exploration and combat, aside from the different propulsion metod the refitted vessels were also equipped with 2 additional aft torpedo launchers. The USS Valiant was the first vessel of this class to be refitted to these specification. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
By 2409, the Constitution-class refit was deemed a middling cruiser, and officers ranked lieutenant commander or higher were able to command one. Starfleet launched sister ship classes in the 2390s decade, namely the Excalibur- and Vesper-class cruisers. Later in 2409, a more advanced retrofit variant entered service, the Exeter-class. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Phaser banks and photon torpedo launchers were standard equipment on these ships. The saucer, nacelles, pylons and hull were interchangeable with Excalibur-, Exeter- and Vesper-class starships. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Livery[]
In the 25th century, the design of the Enterprise-class advanced escort allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at starbases. These options were designated Type 1-6, 8, 8b and Veteran. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
