Epsilon Hydrae, also known as Hydra Epsilon or the Epsilon system, is a star system located in or near the space of the Klingon Empire and Federation, near 59 Eridani and Brestant.
History and specifics[]
A multiple star system with five stars, Epsilon Hydrae is visible from Earth in the Hydra constellation, some 135 light-years distant. (ST reference: Star Charts)
Hydra Epsilon's orbit included a number of planets, including third planet Hydra Epsilon III and fourth planet Epsilon IV. (ST reference: Star Charts; TOS - Strange New Worlds V short story: "Yeoman Figgs")
By the 2260s decade, third planet Hydra Epsilon III was considered a colonization candidate by the Federation, but an initial planetary survey in 2267 by the starship USS Enterprise found it to contain many deadly hazards. (TOS - Strange New Worlds V short story: "Yeoman Figgs")
- The story "Yeoman Figgs" implicated this was a Federation colonial prospect, while later appearances suggested it was in or near the Klingon Empire's sphere of influence. This is not necessarily contradictory, as the system could have been ceded or annexed either way between the 23rd and 24th centuries.
Mapmaker K'tark included this system on his 2266 Imperial Klingon Empire star chart. (ST reference: Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library)
