Estrella Miyakawa was a Human female who lived during the 24th century. A native of Mexico on Earth, Miyakawa was a member of the Federation Starfleet.

Biography[]

At Starfleet Academy, Miyakawa was a classmate of future USS Enterprise-D commanding officer, Jean-Luc Picard. While at the academy Picard tutored her on some of her courses in exchange for her teaching him Spanish. Neither effort was successful at the time.

During the first part of her Starfleet career Miyakawa witnessed Jean-Luc Picard, Jack Crusher, and Walker Keel moving in tandem together through the academy and into the service. She and many others assumed that the three of them would rise to command their own ships before returning to Starfleet Academy to pass on their knowledge to the next generation of Starfleet cadets. When thinking of her friend Picard in 2368 she reflected on how differently fate had turned out than she assumed it would - with Picard being the only one of the three still alive.

Having a reputation as being brusque and somewhat difficult to work with, Miyakawa lagged behind her academy classmates in promotions. In the early 2360s, Starfleet made it clear to her that unless she agreed to a transfer away from starship duty she would not progress beyond the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Deciding to take a transfer than remain stuck at the rank of Lieutenant Commander for the rest of her career, she expected a prestigious desk assignment near the core of the Federation. Instead she was named the commanding officer of Starbase 193. As the base was on the frontier, she was the sole Starfleet officer on the base, which was crewed by civilian technicians. She eventually came to realize that she had found her place within Starfleet, with her brusque manner becoming an asset in commanding the frontier outpost. Her manner won her respect from hardened locals, and gained her a rapid promotion.

Miyakawa was still in command of Starbase 193 in 2368. When the Devil's Heart resurfaced, the base was destroyed by Romulans seeking to reclaim the Heart. Miyakawa survived the destruction and led the efforts to rebuild the base. Base bar owner Camenae predicted her hard work in rebuilding the base would probably earn her a promotion to Commodore within a year. (TNG novel: The Devil's Heart)
