Europa was a moon in orbit of the planet Jupiter, located in the Sol star system. (ST reference: Star Charts)

Specifics[]

Europa was a class-G moon with a -160° Celsius frozen surface capping a liquid water ocean and a rocky core. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds, TLE novel: The Buried Age)

The smooth ice on the surface was one kilometer thick. (Last Unicorn RPG - Starfleet Academy module: A Cadet's Guide to Sector 001 Earth)

Its ocean was inhabited by schools of 50-meter-long Europan squids. (ST novel: Preserver)

History[]

Europa was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610, as noted in a Los Angeles Times newspaper article. (PIC episode: "Watcher")

In 2024, billboard signs in Los Angeles advertised the Europa Mission and invited astronauts to "to boldly go". (PIC episode: "Assimilation")

The Shango X-1 was part of Europa Mission and meant to commence a four-year mission. The French astronaut Renée Picard was part of the mission. (PIC episode: "Watcher")

In the 21st or 22nd century, the Nautilus was the first Earth ship to explore Europa's ocean. A school of the squids cracked her hull, causing her to sink and implode. The ocean wasn't visited again for 50 years. (ST novel: Preserver)

By 2146, Europa Base had been built by the United Earth. (ENT novel: What Price Honor?)

In 2198, a commercial resort named Club Jove Adventure opened on the moon, and was still popular in the 24th century. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

In the 23rd century, 20 million people lived in and around Europa. It was the site of the Sol V shipyard. (FASA RPG module: The Federation)

In 2358, Jean-Luc Picard aboard Cleopatra's Needle discovered a planet thought to be like Europa, with cryovolcanoes ejecting water into space. This world had aquatic life inhabiting subglacial oceans near volcanic vents. (TLE novel: The Buried Age)

In 2375, Picard, Data, William T. Riker, and Deanna Troi experienced a holodeck simulation of the Nautilus disaster. (ST novel: Preserver)

Europa 2411

Europa in 2411.

Starfleet launched the first batch of exploration-oriented Luna-class starships in 2379, all named after moons in the Sol system including the USS Europa. (TTN novel: Taking Wing Luna Class Concept Notes)

In the aftermath of the dislocation of Earth citizens when the Dark Matter Anomaly threatened the Sol system, and the rejoining of United Earth to the Federation in 3190, a refugee center was active on Europa. The convict Cleveland Booker was sentenced to assist refugees and took a Federation shuttle from Earth to Europa. (DSC episode: "Coming Home")

Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline in which Khan Noonien Singh won the Eugenics Wars, the Khan was also the first Human to set foot on Europa. (ST - Myriad Universes - Infinity's Prism novella: Seeds of Dissent)
