The F4F Wildcat was a type of 20th century fighter aircraft used by the United States and British Royal Navy aboard aircraft carriers during World War II.
Service history[]
F4F Wildcats, along with the TBF Avenger and SBD Dauntless, were among the aircraft types assigned to the United States Navy's carriers USS Enterprise and USS Hornet.
On 26 October 1942, following the sinking of the Hornet at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the Enterprise made space on her flight deck for Hornet's surviving aircraft. Landing signal operators landed more than 60 of Hornet's planes, although five of her Wildcats had to be ditched. (ST - Enterprise Logs short story: "World of Strangers")
