Background[]

Placing this story into the timeline is somewhat challenging. Section 4 seems to represent the present of this story. It has been placed in 2385 due to Wesley Crusher's appearance in Star Trek: Prodigy in that same year. But it could also be placed earlier or even later into the time range of the later Star Trek: Picard. In principle, this story works both as part of the First Splinter timeline as well as the timeline established by the latter series.
Sections regarding Jack R. Crusher's death are also slightly difficult to place as the date of his death seems to differ slightly from taking place either in late 2353 or 2354 depending on the sources used.
