The Federation News Service was a prominent news organization in the United Federation of Planets. FNS, as it was popularly known, offered both video and prose feeds across subspace to anyone in the Federation and beyond, and was widely regarded as one of the most unbiased and professional news services in the Federation.
In the 2260s, noted journalist Tim Pennington served as an FNS correspondent in Paris, then later aboard Starbase 47. He was dismissed in 2265 by FNS executive editor Arlys Warfield, after reporting what was proven to be falsified information regarding the destruction of the USS Bombay. (VAN novel: Harbinger)
During the Dominion War, the FNS was open about how badly the Federation Alliance was faring against the Dominion. Benjamin Sisko once told his father Joseph three months into war that the situation was actually much worse. (DS9 episode: "A Time to Stand")
Jake Sisko served as an FNS correspondent aboard Starbase Deep Space 9 immediately prior to and during the Dominion War. (DS9 episode: "Call to Arms") A week after Operation Return, Jake was told the News Service would publish his stories about the Dominion occupation (which had been censored by Weyoun) as a book. (DS9 episodes: "A Time to Stand", "You Are Cordially Invited")
In late 2374, Jake told an FNS editor he would be able to get an interview with Grand Nagus Zek. (DS9 episode: "Valiant") Several months later, Jake was aboard the USS Defiant reporting on the First Battle of Chin'toka. (DS9 episode: "Tears of the Prophets")
Belinda Gomez worked briefly as an onscreen anchor for FNS's North American regional feed in the late 2360s or early 2370s. She left this job, she claimed, due to office politics at FNS. (SCE eBook: Breakdowns)
FNS produced a number of special reports in mid 2376 concerning the arrest and financial downfall of businessman Rod Portlyn. (CoE eBook: Troubleshooting)
By 2379, Regia Maldonado was a reporter for the FNS and appeared at daily press briefings held by Kant Jorel. Prior to the election, she presented a special report on the presidential candidates featuring commentaries by former President Jaresh-Inyo, retired Starfleet Admiral Norah Satie, and author Jacqueline Sharp. (TNG novel: A Time for War, A Time for Peace)
During the vote-counting process following the 2379 election, FNS accurately predicted Nanietta Bacco to be the winner, just as it had accurately predicted every Federation Presidential election since its inception. (TNG novel: A Time for War, A Time for Peace)
- It is unclear whether the Federation News Service is a government-sponsored news agency, akin to the United Kingdom's BBC, or a fully independent entity.
