Ferdinand Magellan (c. 148027 April 1521) was a Portuguese maritime explorer who tried to find a westward route to the Spice Islands of Indonesia, becoming the first person to lead an expedition across the Pacific Ocean, and also accomplished the first successful circumnavigation of the Earth during the late 15th century to the mid-16th century.

After Earth Starfleet Captain Erika Hernandez and other Columbia officers stuck on the Caeliar city-ship of Axion were thrown back in time to 1519, Hernandez thought of Magellan during her exile and his circumnaviation. (ST - Destiny novel: Mere Mortals)

Starfleet named numerous starships and shuttlecraft Magellan in his honor.
