Ferdinand Magellan (c. 1480 – 27 April 1521) was a Portuguese maritime explorer who tried to find a westward route to the Spice Islands of Indonesia, becoming the first person to lead an expedition across the Pacific Ocean, and also accomplished the first successful circumnavigation of the Earth during the late 15th century to the mid-16th century.
