History and specifics[]

William T. Riker, first officer of the USS Enterprise-D, received a promotion to captain after his commanding officer Jean-Luc Picard had been assimilated by the Borg in 2367. After Picard had been liberated from the Borg, Riker declined command of the USS Melbourne and returned to his previous rank of commander. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds")

Following the Battle of Sector 001, Lieutenant Lian T'su of the USS Budapest received a field promotion to the rank of lieutenant commander and the position of second officer. (ST video game: Starship Creator)

Aventine rear

The USS Aventine in 2381.

During the Borg Invasion of 2381, the USS Aventine saw its first combat action against the Borg during the invasion of Acamar. During the battle, the commanding officer and the executive officer were both killed, leaving Lieutenant Commander Ezri Dax in command of the ship. One week after the battle, in February 2381, Starfleet officially promoted Dax to captain and gave her command of the Aventine, skipping the rank of commander entirely. Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline where Kes remained aboard USS Voyager, Captain Kathryn Janeway perished during the Year of Hell. Her first officer, the provisional lieutenant commander Chakotay, became the next captain and carried the four full pips signifying his new rank on his uniform's collar. (VOY episode: "Before and After")
