History[]
In the late 24th century, the 3rd Fleet was a standing fleet, centered around the Sol star system. With the center of the Federation under their watch, the 3rd Fleet is staffed with an elite corps of tactical specialists and dynamic commanders. Over the course of a decade, the 3rd Fleet faced action responding to two Borg invasions and a Breen attack. (Decipher RPG module: Starfleet Operations Manual)
In a timeline where the Borg invaded inte Federation again in 2377, the 3rd Fleet was sent to destroy the Borg Collective's base in the Delta Quadrant. During a standoff between the Third Fleet and the Collective in star system J-356, both factions were decimated by a sudden attack of Species 8472. The fleet's flagship, USS Allegheny, was damaged and left adrift near a class J gas giant and rescued by a task force led by USS Enterprise -E on stardate 54664.7 (August 31st, 2377). Three other ships were salvaged as well, the USS Asama, USS Magellan and an unnamed Intrepid-class destroyer. (TNG video game: Armada II mission: "The Cavalry")
During the invasion of the Borg Collective in 2381, the 3rd Fleet suffered an antimatter shortage when their reserves ran out. Federation President Nanietta Bacco drafted, and likely signed, an executive order allowing Starfleet to commandeer civilian fuel sources. (ST - Destiny novel: Gods of Night)
From at least 2409 onward, a red and a blue banner of the 3rd Fleet were on display at Starfleet Academy year-round, including on Graduation Day. By this time, the 3rd Fleet was attached to Starfleet Medical Command. The blue banner hung above the bar in the 602 Club in Building 4 of the Academy, while the red banner hung above the reception in the center of the building. Also in the year 2409, the Third Fleet responded to a distress call dispatched by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers from the Utopia Planitia repair facility at Mars. A Klingon fleet had attacked the repair facility, staying away from the main Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards construction facilities. While most of the Klingon fleet escaped, the Third Fleet captured some of the raiders. Imperial Intelligence officer K'men informed the raid leader of Third Fleet's involvement during their flight from Mars. (STO - Warzone mission: "Mars, Bringer of War")
