Service history and disposition[]
Ships named Europa were active in the 23rd century, when Starfleet deployed a pair of Nimitz-class battlecruisers, the USS Europa and its replacement in the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-2257. (STO - Age of Discovery short story: "Utopia Planetia: The Mystery of Yard 39")
Starfleet launched the first batch of exploration-oriented Luna-class starships in 2379, all named after moons in the Sol star system, including the new Europa. This vessel was named for Jupiter's moon Europa. (TTN novel: Taking Wing Luna Class Concept Notes)
The Europa in 2401.
In the year 2401, the USS Stargazer investigated a spatial anomaly discovered by the USS Avalon. When a massive Borg ship emerged from the anomaly, the Europa was part of the armada Starfleet built up to reinforce the Stargazer and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. When the Borg Queen boarded the Stargazer, the Borg Collective attempted to seize control of the fleet. Picard self destructed the Stargazer to stop the Borg and save the armada.
