A flame-thrower was a weapon developed on Earth in the early 20th century, which shot flames using a directed stream of inflammable liquid or gas.

In 1993, Ament advised Khan Noonien Singh to find a more precise, more surgical means of dealing with Vasily Hunyadi, comparing it to using a scalpel instead of a flamethrower. (TOS - The Eugenics Wars novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)

The 21st century version of the flame-thrower was napalm-fueled and laser powered, and had a range of over 100 yards. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)

Gariff Lucsly told Marion Dulmur that giving James T. Kirk knowledge of future technology would be like giving a flamethrower to a pyromaniac. (DTI novel: Forgotten History)

On Floe I, flamethrowers were called "flame guns." In 2266, the Floes threatened to use flame guns against a USS Enterprise landing party to make them write a false report on their civilization, and against each other when civil war broke out. (TOS comic: "Ice Journey")
