A flare was a device used to illuminate a position or send a distress signal.

In 2267, Anzar fired a super-flare from his spacecraft which temporarily blinded the USS Enterprise's sensors, allowing his partner Allura to depart with the biomagnetic recordings of the planet Styra. (TOS comic: "The Hijacked Planet")

In 2292, Peter Kirk and the surviving crew of the USS Feynman used flares to drive creatures away from the Galileo. (TOS - Star Trek Special comic: "Bloodline")

The battle jumpsuits used by the Tarn on Torgu-Va came equipped with flares. (TNG novel: The Forgotten War)

In 2381, a strike team from the USS Aventine used flares to illuminate the interior of a dormant Borg cube. The flares were also used as weapons against the Borg drones. (ST - Destiny novel: Lost Souls)
