A flaygrub was a carnivorous animal native to the planet Midgwis.

History and specifics[]

Flaygrubs were the planet's apex predator. A lack of water made them uncommon in southern savannah where the Midgwin resided, and would not approach Midgwin warrens during the nighttime.

In the 23rd century, Federation researchers considered flaygrubs and bargumps the dominant lifeforms on Midgwis, more so even than the humanoid Midgwin. When Klingon scouting parties explored the world in the early 2260s decade, they hunted flaygrubs and hootings.

In the mid-2260s, contact specialist Dr. L'jian witnessed Midgwin hunters drive a flaygrub off a cliff in order to kill it. (TOS novel: Ghost-Walker)
