First introduced in 1971, floppy disks were transportable magnetic computer disks common until the early 21st century. After seeing them in his History of Technology class, James T. Kirk noted that the basic design, a colored protective case surrounding the sensitive storage medium, remained in use long after the disks themselves were phased out.
