The Fokker DR-1 was a type of 20th century German triplane fighter aircraft that saw combat during World War I.

Legacy[]

In 2269, "Baron" Trelane created a space-traveling replica Fokker DR-1 as part of his newfound fascination with Earth war planes. He piloted the craft while attacking Federation starships near the Delphi system. After contact was lost with the SS Mniki'rr, SS Shinobi, and USS Zimbabwe, the USS Enterprise was dispatched to investigate. From the Fokker's cockpit, Trelane bantered with Captain James T. Kirk before engaging in combat. During the battle, Trelane deposited Kirk, Spock, and Leonard McCoy on Gothos, which now contained a WWI trench warfare site, German town, and a hangar for the triplane not far from his castle. With the help of Lt. Cmdr. Walter Ellis of the Zimbabwe, the landing party collected a number of items, including dynamite, which they used to blow up Trelane's triplane, hoping that act would prod Trelane to release them. (TOS video game: Judgment Rites mission: No Man's Land)

The USS Richtofen was presumably named for Manfred von Richtofen, a.k.a. the "Red Baron", who famously flew a red Fokker DR-1.
