This stronghold was a notable place in the Na'nam continent and during ancient Vulcan history, it had seen much war over its surface. In fact, before the Age of Surak, it was the second most contested region behind the oasis at ShirKahr. For over five thousand years before the events of the Awakening, Aba'kur defended the entrance of a small valley called Nal'shin. The valley was cool enough that small quantities of food were capable of being grown there which made it an attractive resource to control. Nal'shin was located close to two active volcanoes and the region was able to produce food, metals and even a small amount of water. As such, this made it a prime target for competing forces that warred on Vulcan at the time. Throughout the Age of Antiquity, many battles were fought at Fort Aba'kur by warlords who sought to control the valley.
Archaeologists from the Academy of Sciences believed that many types of artifacts and information from different periods from pre-Awakening history were capable of being found at this location. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of Kolinahr: The Vulcans)
